In a dystopian alternate reality, a government office drone named Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) discovers that a typographical error has led to an innocent man’s arrest, a chain of events that quickly unravels Lowry’s world. Despite being filmed on a modest budget, Brazil is one of director Terry Gilliam’s most visually dazzling films, aided greatly by the imaginative, Academy Award–nominated art direction of production designer Norman Garwood and set decorator Maggie Gray. The vivid supporting cast includes Robert De Niro, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Jim Broadbent, and Ian Richardson. Neil Jordan wrote and directed this romantic thriller set against the backdrop of the “Troubles” in Ireland, with Stephen Rea starring as an IRA soldier whose life becomes entwined with that of a British prisoner (Forest Whitaker). Stephen Woolley began his producing career with Jordan’s The Company of Wolves (1984) and the pair reunited for several projects including The Crying Game , which earned Woolley a Best Picture nomination. Jordan won for his original screenplay, and other nominations were earned by Jordan’s direction, Kant Pan’s film editing, and the performances of Rea and newcomer Jaye Davidson.
