Anatomy of a Murder in 4K Wed, Mar 27 | 7:30pm | DGT Selected by the Music Branch. Free for Museum Members.
This smart, morally ambiguous courtroom drama was based on the bestseller by Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker (writing as Robert Traver), inspired by a groundbreaking 1952 case in which he represented a defendant accused of murdering a man who allegedly assaulted his wife. Director Otto Preminger made the unexpected choice of hiring the legendary Duke Ellington to provide the film’s droll, jazzy score, and Ellington also performs onscreen in one scene. The film earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture; the performances of James Stewart, Arthur O’Connell, and George C. Scott; Sam Leavitt’s black-and-white cinematography; Louis R. Loeffler’s film editing; and Wendell Mayes’s adapted screenplay. DIRECTED BY: Otto Preminger. WRITTEN BY: Wendell Mayes. WITH: James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O’Connell. 1959. 161 min. USA. B&W. English. 4K DCP.
SHOWGIRLS
Showgirls in 35mm Wed, Mar 20 | 7:30pm | DGT
Selected by the Marketing and Public Relations Branch.
Director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas followed up the international success of their 1992 thriller Basic Instinct with this lavish drama set against the glitzy and tawdry backdrop of the Las Vegas entertainment world. Elizabeth Berkley is Nomi, a fearless young woman determined to make it in show business at any cost, and Gina Gershon is Cristal Connors, the star whose throne Nomi is scheming to claim. Arguably Verhoeven’s most controversial film, and the rare studio film to be released with an NC-17
