Casting director Ross Brown and writer-director Peter Bogdanovich assembled an impeccable cast of veterans and young actors for this authentic and evocatively filmed adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s novel about life in a declining, small Texas town in 1951. Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman won Oscars for their mem- orable performances, and Jeff Bridges (also nominated), Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, and Randy Quaid made strong impressions early in their careers.

Music legend Diana Ross portrayed another music legend, Billie Holiday, in this biopic, which earned the star a Best Actress nomi- nation and worked as both lavish Hollywood entertainment and an unflinching study of addiction. Casting director Joe Scully supported Ross with a top-notch cast including the effortlessly charming Billy Dee Williams as the man in Holiday’s life, comedy great Richard Pryor as “Piano Man,” Isabel Sanford, and Scatman Crothers.
