2001: A Space Odyssey
Tue, Apr 5 | 7:30pm | DGT Selected by the Cinematographers Branch.
Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking space epic was one of the most influential films of its time, and a surprise counter-culture smash due to its psychedelic Stargate sequence. The film ushered in an era of ambitious and intelligent science-fiction cinema. While its visual effects set a new high standard (for which Kubrick received an Oscar), its eye-popping 70mm cinematography was an equal contributor to its visual grandeur, with Geoffrey Unsworth ( Cabaret ) serving as principal cinematographer and John Alcott ( Barry Lyndon ) shooting additional scenes including the "Dawn of Man" prologue.
