In a 1980s New York City populated entirely by animals, a lonely dog purchases a mail-order robot and develops a deep connection with his new best friend. With no dialogue and a simple visual style that reflects the 2007 comic book on which it was based, this Oscar-nominated charmer from writer-director Pablo Berger ( Blancanieves ) has both plentiful humor and unexpected emotional impact in its portrayal of the universal need for love and companionship.
