directorial debut with this faithful adaptation of the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption about the friendship that develops in a Maine prison between a falsely incarcerated banker (Tim Robbins) and a lifer (Morgan Freeman). In the three decades since its release, the film has become one of the most beloved of its time. Shawshank Redemption received a total of seven nominations, including Best Picture; Best Actor, for Freeman’s moving performance; and Original Score, for Thomas Newman’s emotionally restrained composition. The film’s production designer, Patrice Vermette (nominated with set decorator Paul Hotte), was also responsible for designing the film’s alien language—one of Arrival ’s many remarkable and imaginative visuals.
