SPELLBOUND

Spellbound in 35mm Mon, Feb 10 | 7:30pm | TMT

Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck teamed up for one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s most commercially successful films, a romantic mystery with striking dream imagery provided by artist Salvador Dalí. Bergman plays Dr. Constance Petersen, the only female psychologist at tony Green Manors mental hospital, who becomes attracted to the hospital’s new director, Dr. Anthony Edwardes (Peck). When Petersen discovers that Edwardes seems to be as troubled as any of her patients, she investigates his dreams for clues to the mystery that surrounds him and asks the question suggested by the film’s original poster: “Will he kiss me or kill me?” DIRECTED BY: Alfred Hitchcock. WRITTEN BY: Ben Hecht. ADAPTATION BY: Angus MacPhail. WITH: Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov, Leo G. Carroll. 1945. 111 min. USA. B&W. English. 35mm. Print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive. Strawberry Mansion Thu, Feb 13 | 7:30pm | TMT Set in 2035, Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney’s idiosyncratic indie questions whether the subconscious is a commodity. In a future where dreams are documented and uploaded to be taxed according to their contents, dream auditor Preble (Audley) visits artist Bella (Penny Fuller) in her remote home and finds 2,000 VHS tapes—an outdated dream-capturing format—containing seven years of her dream records. With ethereal music by Baltimore-based recording artist Dan Deacon, uncanny art direction, and rough-hewn lo-fi effects, Strawberry Mansion transcends its sci-fi roots to delicately explore the permeability of waking life and dream states. DIRECTED/WRITTEN BY: Albert Birney, Kentucker Audley. WITH: Penny Fuller, Kentucker Audley, Grace Glowicki, Linas Phillips. 2021. 91 min. USA. Color. English. DCP.

MEMENTO

Memento in 35mm preceded by La Jetée Fri, Feb 7 | 7:30pm | TMT La Jetée One of cinema’s most influential sci-fi films, Chris Marker’s classic short La Jetée traces a circular time-travel experiment in a post-apocalyptic Paris. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), Marker’s film is perhaps best known for having inspired Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys (1995), though its influence is also apparent in Christopher Nolan’s Memento (2000) through the symbolic use of still photography as a stand-in for the perception of truth. DIRECTED/WRITTEN BY: Chris Marker. WITH: Hélène Châtelain, Davos Hanich, Jacques Ledoux, André Heinrich. 1962. 27 min. France. B&W. English. DCP. Memento Christopher Nolan’s first feature film made in the United States is a dazzlingly conceived and executed thriller about a man with amnesia (Guy Pearce) who, seeking revenge for the death of his wife, finds himself an unwitting pawn in the hands of those who pretend to help him. The film’s narrative is told in reverse order to reflect the hero’s condition. Produced by Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd, this brain-teasing deconstruction of classic noir earned Oscar nominations for Original Screenplay and Film Editing. DIRECTED/WRITTEN BY: Christopher Nolan. STORY BY: Jonathan Nolan. WITH: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior. 2000. 116 min. USA. Color. Scope. English. Rated R. 35mm.
