Director Arthur Penn described his collabo- ration with editor Dede Allen on Bonnie and Clyde as “developing a rhythm for the film so that it has the complexity of music.” Her innovations—from the influence of French New Wave to the startling mix of slow- and regular-motion in the film’s shocking finale— helped to make this one of the defining films of 1960s cinema, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the outlaw couple.
