Tasked with creating illustrations for a new edition of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s novel Pather Panchali, Satyajit Ray was so captivated by the story of the Roy family—father Horihor, mother Shorbojoya daughter Durga, baby brother Apu, and widowed aunt Indir—that he became a filmmaker in order to adapt it. The Roys share a tumbledown ancestral home on the rural outskirts of Calcutta (Kolkata), where a distant train’s smoke on the horizon offers a faint trace of the urban world. Charles Schnee won an Oscar for his original screenplay about a talented but manipulative film producer (Kirk Douglas) and his relationships with a star (Lana Turner), a screenwriter (Dick Powell), and a director (Barry Sullivan). Vincente Minnelli directed this witty and insightful behind-the- scenes look at Hollywood, with Douglas nominated for his commanding performance. The film won additional Oscars for its black-and-white art direction, cinematography, costume design, and Gloria Grahame’s touching supporting performance as Powell’s vivacious wife. Paddy Chayefsky’s witty screenplay about the excesses of contemporary television seemed larger- than-life at the time of its release, but seen today, it is an uncanny prediction of the modern media landscape. William Holden is the old-school news producer struggling to cope, Faye Dunaway is the exec determined to make waves, and Peter Finch is the anchorman determined to go out in a blaze of glory. The film won Oscars for Chayefsky’s script and the performances of Dunaway, Finch, and Beatrice Straight. Additional nominees included film editor Alan Heim ( All That Jazz ), whose expert editing highlights the remarkable performances while helping the dialogue-driven story feel effortlessly cinematic.
