Blake Edwards directed this elaborate live-action cartoon about a turn-of-the-20th-century transoceanic race pitting The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) against the moustache- twirling villain Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon, who also plays the Crown Prince of Carpania). This slapstick epic features a colossal pie fight finale and earned five Oscar nominations, including one for composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer’s charming original song “The Sweetheart Tree.” Veteran film and sound editor Tregoweth Brown won an Oscar for the film’s pitch-perfect sound effects. Selected by the Visual Effects Branch. Director Ang Lee brought Yann Martel’s 2001 bestseller to the screen in a dazzling adaptation that demonstrated the potential of computer-animated visual effects and 3D cinematography. Pi Patel (newcomer Suraj Sharma) is a young man who barely survives a shipwreck only to find himself adrift with a menacing tiger. Martel’s book had been thought unfilmable but the filmmakers managed to turn the thoughtful story into a fully cinematic experience. Nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture, it won for Lee’s direction, Claudio Miranda’s cinematography, Mychael Danna’s score, and the visual effects of Bill Westenhofer, Guillaume Rocheron, Erik-Jan De Boer, and Donald R. A mouse living in the cellar of Sherlock Holmes’s house is himself a brilliant detective in this mystery inspired by the Basil of Baker Street books by Eve Titus and Paul Galdone. Four directors collaborated on this charming animated feature, including Disney veteran Burny Mattinson and the team of John Musker and Ron Clements ( The Little Mermaid , Aladdin ), while Vincent Price loaned his unmistakable voice to the evil Professor Ratigan.
