Ariel, a free-spirited and headstrong mermaid with a perpetual curiosity about humans, falls in love with Prince Eric after rescuing him from a shipwreck. In order to fulfill her desire to become human, Ariel makes a deal with Ursula, the evil sea witch, who takes Ariel’s voice in exchange. Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story, this animated musical feature was composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman’s first collaboration with Disney as a team, marking the beginning of what is frequently referred to as the Disney Renaissance era. The film follows Elliott, a 10-year-old boy, who develops a close bond with E.T., an alien being he shelters who was left behind on Earth. Along with his friends and siblings, Elliott is on a quest to help get E.T. back home. Films for families of all ages! All movies in this series are rated G or PG, unless otherwise noted. The final Family Matinee of every month is an accommodative screening* where we offer open captioning, keep the theater dimly lit, and maintain a lower volume for neurodivergent viewers. In December, we’re carrying our annual 3D-cember! tradition into our Family Matinees series for a selection of family-friendly films presented in 3D. Adult and children’s 3D glasses will be available for all screenings. Our 3D-cember! limited series screens from December 24 to December 31. For the first Family Matinees theme of 2024, we’re screening films added to the National Film Registry for their cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance, in conjunction with our limited series Works of Enduring Importance: 35 Years of the National Film Registry screening from December 14, 2023 to January 27, 2024. A fantastic adventure ensues, testing the bonds of sisterly love, full of dazzling imagery and memorable songs including the witty “In Summer” and the instant classic “Let It Go,” which won an Original Song Oscar for the team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The Pink Panther Sat, Feb 3 | 11am | TMT The first comedic caper to feature Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau pits the riotously incompetent French detective against a gentleman thief known as “The Phantom” (David Niven), who has his eye on both the priceless Pink Panther diamond and Clouseau’s beautiful wife (Capucine). Aided by director Blake Edwards’s peerless eye for slapstick, this comedic smash inaugurated decades of sequels and reboots, featured an Oscar-nominated score by Henry Mancini (including his instantly recognizable “The Pink Panther Theme”), and introduced the beloved animated mascot who went on to star in his own series of cartoon shorts. Added to the National Film Registry in 2002. Based on the best-selling children’s novel of the same name written by Walter Farley, this is the tale of a young boy who develops a strong kinship with a wild Arabian stallion after they are shipwrecked and stranded on an island. Soon after they are rescued, they enter into a horse racing competition with the help of Henry, played by Mickey Rooney, who received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as a retired racehorse jockey. The film also received an Academy Award nomination for Film Editing by Robert Dalva, and Alan Splet received a Special Achievement Award for his sound editing work on the film.
