Sissy Spacek (in her fourth performance nominated for Best Actress) and Mel Gibson star as Mae and Tom Garvey, a loving couple struggling to keep their farm and family together in the face of financial stress and the fickleness of nature. Veteran sound editor Kay Rose worked closely with the film’s nominated composer John Williams to find the right balance of sound effects and music—Rose earned a Special Achievement Award for the film’s sound effects editing, the first Oscar won by a female sound editor, and the film was also nominated for its Cinematography and Sound. Director William Friedkin teamed up with former Secret Service agent Gerald Petievich to adapt Petievich’s 1984 novel about two government agents who risk everything to bring down a master counterfeiter. Cinematographer Robby Müller, a longtime collaborator of Wim Wenders, gave the film a memorable, smog-tinged look, and shot a thrilling car chase to rival the one in Friedkin’s The French Connection (1971) . THE SACRIFICE (1986)

Selected by the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch. Director Ridley Scott followed up his science-fiction classic Blade Runner (1982) with an equally opulent fantasy that cast a pre- Top Gun Tom Cruise as Jack o’ the Green, a young forest dweller who must travel to the underworld to rescue his beloved princess and a unicorn from the evil Darkness (Tim Curry). Production designer Assheton Gorton filled Pinewood Studios’ 007 Stage with a massive forest set, lit exquisitely by cinematographer Alex Thomson ( Excalibur ), and Rob Bottin and Peter Robb-King were nominated for the film’s imaginative makeup creations, including Curry’s memorably satanic villain. The final film from master Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky is a solemn, visually elegant look at one family confronting the possible end of civilization. The international cast is led by Ingmar Bergman regular Erland Josephson, and Bergman’s cinematographer, two-time Oscar winner Sven Nykvist ( Cries and Whispers , Fanny and Alexander ), supplied the haunting imagery, including an astounding long take at the film’s finale.
