Winner of the Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards ceremony—making it the first Chilean picture to win in this category—Sebastián Lelio’s sensitive, magical realist story of young transgender woman Marina (Daniela Vega) offers so much more than a compelling narrative, a stunning lead performance, and sumptuous visuals from cinematographer Benjamín Echazarreta. Lelio’s goal to “make a film that hopefully was as complex and beautiful as its main character” also mobilized the transgender rights movement in Chile, resulting in the passing of a landmark gender identity law. Prohibition agent Eliot Ness takes on Al Capone and his Chicago gangsters in this stylish thriller, loosely inspired by Ness’s autobiography and the popular 1960s TV series of the same name. Kevin Costner stars as Ness, supported by a lively cast including Andy García and Charles Martin Smith as his fellow “Untouchables,” a chilling Robert De Niro as Capone, and Sean Connery in his Oscar- winning performance as Ness’s mentor Jim Malone. The Untouchables was the first of three films Ennio Morricone scored for director Brian De Palma, and his stirring music earned the composer his third Original Score nomination. Nominated at the 76th Academy Awards for César Charlone’s cinematography (making him the only Brazilian ever nominated in the category), Fernando Meirelles’s directing, Daniel Rezende’s editing, and writer Bráulio Mantovani’s screenplay adaptation of Paulo Lins’s 1997 novel of the same name, City of God is widely considered one of the best films of the 21st century.
