The Witches Sat, Oct 28 | 11am | TMT In a change of pace for the former cinematographer, Nicolas Roeg directed this delightful horror fantasy, based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, that became one of his strongest and most beloved films. Young Luke Eveshim ( Parenthood’ s Jasen Fisher) is vacationing in Norway with his loving grandmother (actor-director Mai Zetterling) when they run afoul of a coven of witches, led by a gloriously campy Anjelica Huston. A collaboration with Jim Henson Productions, it was the final film Henson personally worked on before his passing in 1990, and his company created the typically imaginative and expert creature effects. DIRECTED BY: Nicolas Roeg. WRITTEN BY: Allan Scott. WITH: Anjelica Huston, Mai Zetterling, Bill Paterson, Jasen Fisher. 1990. 91 min. USA. Color. English. Rated PG; suitable for ages 9+. DCP.

A summer in rural O’ahu takes an exciting turn for two Brooklyn-raised siblings, Pili (Kea Peahu) and Ioane (YouTube star Alex Aiono), when a journal pointing to long-lost treasure sets them on an epic adventure with new friends, and leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage. Screening in honor of National Native American Heritage Month, this Hawai’i-based update on the adventure classic The Goonies (1985) is overhauled with geocaching, an awareness of the digital-age generational divide, and commentary on our addiction to technology. DIRECTED BY: Jude Weng. WRITTEN BY: Christina Strain. WITH: Kea Peahu, Alex Aiono, Lindsay Watson, Owen Vaccaro. 2021. 123 min. USA. Color. English, Hawaiian, Spanish. Rated PG; suitable for ages 9+. DCP.

Pee-wee Herman’s most prized possession is his red bicycle; he refuses to sell it even to his wealthy neighbor, Francis. When the bike is suddenly stolen, Pee-wee is relentless in his search to get it back, even embarking on a road trip across the country after given a phony tip. Will Pee-wee ever reunite with his beloved bike? This charmingly quirky film was Tim Burton’s feature directorial debut and marked his first collaboration with then Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman, the film’s composer. DIRECTED BY: Tim Burton. WRITTEN BY: Phil Hartman, Paul Reubens, Michael Varhol. WITH: Paul Reubens, Elizabeth Daily, Mark Holton. 1985. 91 min. USA. Color. English. Rated PG; suitable for ages 7+. 35mm.

William Castle directed this droll, twisty horror tale about a suspicious millionaire (the irreplaceable Vincent Price) who rents a haunted house to throw a party for his untrustworthy wife, offering his guests $10,000 each to remain in the locked house all night. Castle gave this old- fashioned chiller one of his most famous and inventive gimmicks— “Emergo,” which involved dangling a full-sized plastic skeleton over the theater audience. DIRECTED BY: William Castle. WRITTEN BY: Robb White. WITH: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal. 1958. 75 min. USA. B&W. English. 35mm.

When DIY filmmaker Katie is accepted to her dream school in California, her technophobic father, with whom Katie frequently clashes, cancels her plane ticket in lieu of a family road trip. Little do they know their cross-country excursion will coincide with an apocalyptic machine uprising. Nominated for Animated Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards, this adventure flick—one of Parasite (2019) filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s favorites of that year—features an impressive ensemble voice cast and has as much to say about tech addiction as it does about the importance of family, no matter how much they might embarrass us. DIRECTED BY: Mike Rianda. WRITTEN BY: Mike Rianda, Jeff Rowe. WITH: Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda. 2021. 114 min. USA/Hong Kong. Color. English. Rated PG; suitable for ages 8+. DCP.

Vincent Price (who else?) stars as Dr. Warren Chapin, a pathologist whose experiments prove the human response to fear is caused by a parasitic creature, a “tingler,” attached to the spine. When the doctor’s friend, a silent movie theater owner, and his wife become entangled with Chapin’s experiment, the tingler threatens to break free to menace the population at large. Filmed in black-and-white with a startling infusion of color, the film was originally released with the gimmick “Percepto,” in which random audience members felt their seats vibrate at key moments. DIRECTED BY: William Castle. WRITTEN BY: Robb White. WITH: Vincent Price, Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman, Patricia Cutts. 1959. 82 min. USA. B&W. English. DCP.
