ONGOING SERIES FAMILY

1900 ( Novecento ) Sat, Nov 11 | 2:30pm | TMT Bernardo Bertolucci’s epic period drama about childhood friends Alfredo (Robert De Niro) and Olmo (Gérard Depardieu) as viewed across a widening class divide in mid-century Italy finds composer Ennio Morricone incorporating melodies by the beloved Giuseppe Verdi, whose death coincides with the births of both protagonists at the start of the 20th century. One of the longest films ever released commercially in both the US and internationally, 1900 sweeps across four decades in the lives of landowner Alfredo and peasant farmer Olmo, and boasts an impressive international cast, supported by Dominique Sanda, Burt Lancaster, and silent film actor Francesca Bertini in her final role. THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (L'UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO)

Films for families of all ages! All movies in this series are rated G or PG, unless otherwise noted. The final Family Matinee of every month is an accommodative screening* where we offer open captioning, keep the theater dimly lit, and maintain a lower volume for neurodivergent viewers. In September, we’re hitting the open road with classic films set on the long and winding paths that take us toward adventure. For October, as a nod to our exhibition John Waters: Pope of Trash, on view September 17, 2023 through August 4, 2024, we’re presenting two films from the ultimate showman William Castle, one of Waters’s childhood heroes. This November, we’re highlighting films that center the importance of family and explore the various ways we can define it.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage ( L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo ) Sat, Nov 18 | 7:30pm | TMT

The feature directorial debut of legendary horror filmmaker Dario Argento is a stylish (of course!) mystery thriller about an American writer (Tony Musante) in Rome who finds himself stalked by a killer after trying to save a young woman from a brutal attack. A key film in the giallo canon of Italian thriller cinema, it boasts striking widescreen cinematography by three-time Oscar-winner Vittorio Storaro. The first of five Argento films scored by Ennio Morricone, its wordless vocals helped define the musical voice of giallo . DIRECTED/WRITTEN BY: Dario Argento. WITH: Tony Musante, Suzy Kendall, Eva Renzi, Enrico Maria Salerno. 1970. 96 min. Italy/Germany. Color. Scope. English. Rated PG. 4K DCP. Courtesy of Cinecittà, 4K digital restoration by Cinecittà.

THE DESERT OF THE TARTARS (IL DESERTO DEI TARTARI)

* Accommodative screenings may not always fit the theme for the month’s screenings.

The Desert of the Tartars ( Il deserto dei Tartari ) Thu, Nov 16 | 7:30pm | TMT Young Lt. Drogo (Jacques Perrin) receives his first assignment in a remote outpost, where isolation and boredom threaten to drive him to the edge of sanity. Lauded but often forgotten Bologna-born filmmaker Valerio Zurlini made his final film with an impressive international cast, including Max von Sydow and Jean-Louise Trintignant, and shot them against the arresting visual background of Iran’s Arg-e Bam, the largest adobe structure in the world. Fans of Claire Denis’s Beau Travail (1999) will find similar themes and tone in this adaptation of Dino Buzzati’s 1940 novel, and Ennio Morricone’s sweeping score emphasizes both the vast landscape and our lead’s perilous insulation. DIRECTED BY: Valerio Zurlini. WRITTEN BY: André G. Brunelin. WITH: Jacques Perrin, Vittorio Gassman, Giuliano Gemma, Helmut Griem. 1976. 147 min. Italy/France/West Germany. Color. Italian. Rated PG. 4K DCP. Courtesy of Cinecittà, 4K digital restoration by Cinecittà.

Once upon a Time in America ( C'era una volta in America ) Sat, Nov 25 | 7:30pm | TMT

The final film from Sergio Leone is a gorgeously crafted epic about four boys raised in New York’s Jewish slums in the early part of the 20th century who grow up to be gangsters. Leone’s film was originally released in the US in a severely truncated form, but his expansive original vision has since been restored. Ennio Morricone’s achingly emotional score, a worthy final collaboration between the two filmmakers, features pan flute solos performed by Gheorghe Zamfir. DIRECTED BY: Sergio Leone. WRITTEN BY: Leonardo Benvenuti, Piero De Bernardi, Enrico Medioli, Franco Arcalli, Franco Ferrini, Sergio Leone. WITH: Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, Treat Williams. 1984. 229 min.
