Director Gillian Armstrong’s heartfelt film version of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel brought the beloved March family to life for a new generation of moviegoers. Aspiring writer Jo is played by Winona Ryder, her sisters played by Trini Alvarado, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst—and later Samantha Mathis— and their dependable matriarch is played by Susan Sarandon. Ryder’s engaging perfor- mance earned her an Oscar nomination, as did Colleen Atwood’s vivid costumes and Thomas Newman’s gorgeous orchestral score.

Will Ferrell graduated from Saturday Night Live regular to film star with this contempo- rary yuletide classic, directed by Jon Favreau. Ferrell plays Buddy, a young man raised since infancy at the North Pole, who travels to New York to find his biological father. The delight- fully eclectic cast includes James Caan as his father, Zooey Deschanel as a department store elf, comedy legend Bob Newhart as Papa Elf, and the late Ed Asner as Santa Claus.
