Will Smith received his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali in director Michael Mann’s ambitious biopic of the iconic boxer. The film focuses on Ali’s life from 1964 to 1974, covering not only his legendary bouts but also his political activism, his religious conversion, and his relationship with Malcolm X. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki used both film and digital cinematography to give the film a distinctive, wide-angle look evoking the photojournalism of the era.
