The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Writer-director Jacques Demy pulled off the rare feat of paying homage to the classic tradition of movie musicals while making a groundbreaking work in the form with this melancholy and visually dazzling sung-through musical about the life and loves of a young woman (Catherine Deneuve at her most ach- ingly vulnerable). Michel Legrand earned three Oscar nominations for his music, including for the haunting ballad “I Will Wait for You.”
