Ava DuVernay directed this powerful documentary detailing the history of the 13th Amendment and the impact it continues to have in today’s world. The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1865, officially abolished slavery and involuntary servitude—except as punishment for a crime, and the film makes a carefully researched argument demonstrating how with the help of the prison system this exception is still used to oppress African Americans, backed by interviews with activists, academics, and politicians such as Angela Davis, Henry Louis Gates Jr., and Cory Booker. The film received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature for DuVernay, writer- producer Spencer Averick, and producer Howard Barish.

Ruth E. Carter’s Oscar-winning costumes were one of the many visual splendors of this im- mensely popular superhero adventure, as the veteran designer created a remarkable assort- ment of designs that paid homage to the rich variety of African culture. As much as the film’s elaborate visual effects and the Oscar-winning production design, Carter’s costumes—such as the distinctive red uniforms of the female warriors, the Dora Milaje—provide some of Black Panther ’s most iconic and popular imagery.
